Constable, John (1776-1837), 'Stratford Mill (Young Waltonians)', Mezzotint, c.1834

'Stratford Mill (Young Waltonians)', Mezzotint, c.1834

Mezzotint by David Lucas, as directed by John Constable.

The subject is Stratford Mill, on the Stour. Also known as ‘Young Waltonians’, a reference to Izaak Walton’s ‘The Young Angler’. Later impressions were dedicated to ‘Every Lover of Angling’.

Shirley writes in his catalogue: ‘Begun in the second half of 1834, but quite possibly given over as a result of a quarrel between Constable and Lucas (though by then it had been composed) at the end of that year. Published by Lucas.’ 1840.

Lifetime impressions of this engraving are extremely rare.
