Palmer, Samuel (1805-1881), 'Lonely Tower', Etching, 1879

'Lonely Tower', Etching, 1879

Please Note: This item is not for sale.
Signed in pencil lower right of the plate (outside the image) and 16 in the lower left hand of the plate (outside of the image).

A very fine impression on a sheet of laid Japan paper, with wire lines as published for the Etching Club by H Blair Ansdell of Saville Row in December 1879.

The Lonely Tower is often considered to be Palmer's masterpiece in etching.

(The plate was cancelled in 1880 after the Etching Club edition and the 7th state was printed after the cancellation plate. In the 1920s Henry Macbeth Raeburn restored it, removing most of the traces of the scored lines of cancellation (and with them much of the silhouette of the ‘druidic stones’). An edition was not printed until 1954, when Mary Sholten printed 5 proofs and a numbered edition of 25 on cream wove paper, though these did not come onto the market until 1994).
